Traditionally the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing has commissioned a poster each year to commemorate the conference. The posters have focused on depicting a mix of technical women gathering at the site of that year’s conference and have all been done by the same artist. While these posters have been well received they have a tendency to look alike and after twelve years it seemed like time for a change.

This year we have chosen international graphic artist Jose Ortega to create a unique and compelling poster for the 2013 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing that builds on the conference theme, “Think Big. Drive Forward.”

Jose was born in Ecuador and now lives in Toronto and New York. His work has been exhibited in North and South America, Europe and Asia. He has worked on commissions for such clients such as Absolut Vodka, MTV, Apple Computers, Bloomingdale’s, Sony Music, Amnesty International and the New York Times. Jose has been the subject of numerous articles in international art and design journals including awards from The Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, Print, Communication Arts and Graphics.

Jose has also worked on many public art commissions, including a series of mosaic murals for the MTA’s NYC subway system. He has also been commissioned to design postage stamps for the USPS as well as for Correos Del Ecuador.

We hope you like the 2013 Grace Hopper Celebration poster.

What are the reviewers are looking for?

With any submission the reviewers are looking for relevance, soundness, importance, originality, and quality of the submission.

We’ve put together quick tips for your submission – what you should be telling the reviewer, whether you’re submitting for a panel, workshop, presentation/lightning talk, and Birds of a Feather.

Panel tips:

The ideal panel is comprised of diverse thought leaders who talk 80% of the time with 20% audience interaction

Tell them how the 60 minutes will play out

You cannot have 2 people from the same organization on the panel (includes moderator). Diverse perspectives are important

What are some of the sample questions that will be asked?

Will the panelists bring diverse points of view? Tell them one sentence on what each panelist will bring to the table

Bio of panelists should be tailored to show why they would be a great value add.

Use the starter template provided – 3 pages, double columned, 10 pt font format

Workshop tips:

A workshop is an interactive hands-on session

Tell them how the 60 mins will play out with sample discussion points provided

A talk is NOT a workshop

A workshop facilitator should understand their target audience really well.

Provide a plan explaining how you can scale the workshop for 200-400 attendees. Or you can specify a limit.

Presentation/Lightning Talk tips:

A presentation/lightning talk is delivered by a topic expert with a fresh or unique point of view

Is the topic relevant and original, and are you subject matter experts?

Do not talk about a specific product from your company – instead focus on talking about the technology

Who is your target audience?

Birds of a Feather tips:

A Birds of a Feather session is a discussion forum where there is someone facilitating only 20% of the time with 80% audience interaction

This format is great for sessions focused on sharing experiences

Tell them how the 60 mins will play out – emphasize the interactive part

What are some of the sample questions that will be asked?

Bios of facilitators should be tailored to show why they would be a great value add

Use the starter template provided – 2 pages, double columned, 10 pt font format
