GHC News: Tips for Surviving and Thriving at GHC

By Carolyn Strobel, Marketing Manager, Anita Borg Institute

Here are some great tips on how to survive and make the best of the packed days at the Grace Hopper Celebration.

The days at GHC are action-packed, so take care of yourself: get plenty of sleep and be sure to eat well during meal times. And stay hydrated by drinking regularly – carry a bottle of water with you during the day.

Avoid getting lost by familiarizing yourself with the conference maps ahead of time, and check out our article on Navigating Baltimore.

Look at the program in your conference bag, download the program PDF online, or use the mobile app to see who will be presenting. Pick a few sessions you’d like to attend and then go up and meet the presenters afterwards. GHC is a great opportunity to personally meet and talk with experts in technical fields and make meaningful connections.

Look at the sponsorship page online and check out the Job Book and Career Fair Guide to see which organizations will be at the conference. Ask companies about their technology, work environment, interview process, benefits, etc, and talk to universities about their graduate programs, admissions requirements, research opportunities, and more.

Make connections! Start up a conversation while waiting in line for coffee, introduce yourself to the person sitting next to you in a session, and talk to session presenters and poster presenters about their technology and areas of expertise. Don’t forget to bring your business cards and follow up with your networking connections after the conference.

Rewind at the end of the conference and spend time with the people you’ve met at the RockIT Science & Systers 25th Anniversary Celebration at the Maryland Science Center.

Overall, this is a time to learn new things, network, and have fun! See you in Baltimore.
