GHC News: Summer-Mistine Olmstead – GHC 2011 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

Summer-Mistine is a student at Tennessee Technological University majoring in Software & Scientific Applications. Many students learn about the GHC scholarship, but many don’t even apply.  Summer-Mistine states “One surprising comment about the Grace Hopper Celebration I hear from a lot of women is they have not applied for the scholarship. If I could share one piece of advice, it would be “Do not be shy, apply for the GHC Scholarship!” A world of resources and a supportive network await you at each GHC.”

Summer-Mistine is also a member of Systers.  She joined because her undergraduate advisor and mentor introduced her to the listserv.  ”The benefit I have gotten from being a member is support and advice specific to the struggles most women face while trying to be successful in the field of computing. Bias can come from peers, such as other women, just as easily as it can come from men – and the Systers group offered me support during a time that I didn’t have a network of technical women in my life. Being a member of Systers, and the benefits it provided to me, was foundational to the decision for me to seek a network of support and to continue striving for a career as a computer scientist. I am humbled by the profound grace and wisdom of the women who came before me, and I look forward to offering guidance to the next generation of technical women.” Summer-Mistine expressed.  Another great benefit of being a GHC scholar.
