GHC News: Navigating Baltimore
By Carolyn Strobel, Marketing Manager, Anita Borg Institute
To help you find your way around the city and the convention center, I’ve put together a quick guide to navigating Baltimore while you’re at GHC!
Finding Your Way Around the Conference
Most of GHC 2012 is taking place in the Baltimore Convention Center, but there are also activities happening at the Hilton Baltimore Hotel, and the RockIt Science & Systers 25th Anniversary Celebration will take place at the Maryland Science Center.
Baltimore Convention Center: The majority of conference activities will take place at the Baltimore Convention Center (BCC), including: keynote and plenary sessions, career fair, poster session, awards ceremony, and conference sessions.
The BCC has four floors:
- 100-level – Halls A-E: Keynotes and Plenary Session, Interview Booths, Career Fair Booths, breakfast/lunch, and more
- 200-level: Thursday evening post-awards dancing
- 300-level: Registration, session rooms, conference information, coat check, Starbucks and Market Fresh
- 400-level – Ballroom I and II: Conference sessions
Hilton Baltimore Hotel: Select invitation-only conference sessions, as well as special lunches and receptions, will take place at the Hilton, along with Grace Hopper Open Source Day on Saturday. Childcare is also located in the Hilton (accessible by elevator from the hotel’s main lobby).
The Hilton is connected to the BCC via a Skybridge that can be accessed on the 300-level of the convention center. It leads to the 2nd floor of the Hilton East tower. It is an approximately 7-minute walk between the BCC and the Hilton, so plan your time accordingly.
Get acquainted with the layout of the BCC and the Hilton before the conference by downloading the Conference Maps (PDF).
Maryland Science Center: The culminating Friday evening event of this year’s Grace Hopper Celebration – the RockIT Science and Systers 25th Celebration – will take place at the Maryland Science Center, located on the Baltimore Harbor. The Maryland Science Center is an approximately 15-minute walk from the BCC. We will have guides directing attendees between the BCC and the Maryland Science Center, so don’t worry about getting lost.
