GHC News: Heather Pon-Barry – GHC SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
NSF sponsored
Heather is a Ph.D. student at Harvard University. Since beginning graduate school, Heather always wanted to venture on the academia career path, but like others had doubts on whether it was the right choice for her. She states “Hearing about the varied experiences and career paths of women at Grace Hopper convinced me of the importance of taking risks and reminded me of the large network of women available for support. Just a week ago, I officially accepted a tenure-track position in computer science, beginning January 2013!”
Some of our GHC scholars have been to a GHC before, but used their opportunity as a GHC scholar to gain more value out of the conference. ”GHC 2011 was the second GHC I attended. This past year, I focused on taking advantage of the networking opportunities. I went out of my comfort zone and introduced myself to women in both academia and industry. I also scheduled a few job interviews. Getting practice in networking and receiving positive feedback from the women I met boosted my self-confidence and prepared me for the subsequent stretch of job interviews that I had in early 2012,” Heather expressed. GHC gives students direction and implode them with information so that they can make informed decisions on which career path to take.
