Be a Hopper! : Hopper FAQ
- How are Hoppers compensated?
- Hoppers get a complementary conference registration and a T-shirt. Once you are accepted as a Hopper you will receive instructions on how to register as a Hopper without paying a registration fee.
- Are Hoppers reimbursed for travel expenses?
- Hoppers are NOT reimbursed for travel expenses. Hoppers pay their own airfare, hotel charges and other expenses. Do not apply to be a Hopper until you have secured funding for your travel expenses.
- How much do Hoppers work?
- Hoppers work a total of 8 hours for the conference. When you are accepted as a Hopper you will be notified of what times you will be working and what jobs you will be doing.
- When do Hoppers work?
- Hopper jobs may take place before the conference starts or during the conference. When you apply to be a Hopper, you will indicate what times you are available to work. Be sure to indicate only those time periods when you will be at the Keystone Resort. Some time periods are a day or two before the conference starts, so don’t sign up for those unless you are able to arrive at Keystone early.
- Do Hoppers miss conference sessions?
- There are Hopper jobs that take place during some conference sessions and require Hoppers to miss those sessions if they are assigned to work those jobs. If there is a session you particularly want to see, do not select the time period on your application that corresponds to that session.
- What do Hoppers do?
- Hoppers monitor program sessions, stuff conference bags, greet and assist attendees and presentors, take notes in sessions, assist Anita Borg Institute staff with conference events or staff the Anita Borg Institute store. These jobs may be a day or two before the conference or during the conference.
- How are Hoppers chosen?
- Hoppers applications are matched with job openings according to the time slots that the applicant is available to work. The more time you are available, the more likely it is that you will be chosen.
- Do Hoppers need any special skills?
- Hoppers need only to be willing and able to work for 8 hours. Hoppers also need to have a cell phone at the conference so they can be contacted if there are any changes to assignments. We will instruct you for whatever job you are assigned. If you have any special skills related to conference management, please note that on your application.
- Should I register for the conference?
- Don’t register for the conference if you apply to be a Hopper. If you are chosen to be a Hopper, you will receive instructions on how to register as a Hopper without paying a registration fee. If you are not chosen, you will be allowed to register at the Early Bird rate.
