GRACE HOPPER CELEBRATION BRINGS TOGETHER TOP CTOs
FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY
Plenary Panel to Discuss Diversity of Approaches to the CTO Role
During World’s Largest Gathering of Women in Computing
PALO ALTO, Calif. — Sept. 19, 2008 —The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (ABI) today announced a panel of leading CTOs that will be speaking in a plenary session at the 2008 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing: Greg Papadopoulos, CTO and Executive Vice President of Research and Development, Sun Microsystems; Nan Mattai, Senior Vice President, Engineering and Technology, Rockwell Collins Engineering & Technology; Justin Rattner, Vice President and CTO, Intel Corporation, Head of the Corporate Technology Group and an Intel Senior Fellow; and Sophie V. Vandebroek, Corporate Vice President, CTO, and President, Xerox Innovation Group.
“This panel will discuss the CTO’s unique role and evolution, as well as the diversity of approaches to the role,” said Deanna Kosaraju, vice president, programs, Anita Borg Institute. “The wide-ranging topics will include what makes for great technical leadership, how to prepare for becoming a CTO, and a discussion of why so few women become CTOs and technical leaders.”
In addition to the plenary panel, the Grace Hopper Celebration includes a CTO Forum that will be attended by top CTOs from around the country. The CTO Forum is sponsored by Intel. This private forum will address critical issues facing technologists, including the decreasing number of students enrolling in technology programs— a problem impacting all technology companies. The CTOs will also be presented with the results of “Climbing the Technical Ladder: Obstacles and Solutions for Mid-Level Women in Technology,” a study conducted by ABI and the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University and funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. The study results will be published on October 1, 2008.
CTOs attending the Forum will also participate in a luncheon program with undergraduate and graduate students.
The world’s largest gathering of women in computing in industry, academia, and government, the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) is a four-day technical conference designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. This year the conference will be in Keystone, Colorado, October 1-4, 2008. Registration for the conference closes on September 27, 2008. For more information, go to www.gracehopper.org.
